Poodll users in mainland China should configure Poodll to work in the "Ningxia, China" region. This will improve the performance and reliability of the service.

NB By default your Poodll API user and secret are not enabled in the Ningxia region. Please contact Poodll to have them enabled. Then follow the steps below.

For each of the Cloud Poodll plugins that you have installed, and also for the Poodll Filter:

  1.  Visit the plugin's settings page in the site administration
  2. Change the Cloud Poodll server URL to : cloud.poodll.cn
  3. Change the AWS Region to: Ningxia
  4. Save the settings page.
  5. After saving, click "Refresh License Information" below the "API Secret." You should see some information about your subscription and a message saying the plugin is authorised for use on this site.

For new sites and new activities that is all that you need to do.

Existing Activities

Existing activities may have the AWS region set locally. This will be true for:

  • Poodll ReadAloud
  • Poodll MiniLesson
  • Poodll Solo
  • Poodll WordCards

In that case you will need to visit each of the activities and change the "AWS Region" (or just "Region") setting to: "Ningxia, China." NB. Do not change activity regions until you have completed the changes in the site administration. This will ensure data is regenerated correctly (see below).

Existing Activities and Speech

Poodll generates resources to assist in speech recognition and text-to-speech that are stored in the AWS region. If you change the current region those resources should be re-generated automatically.

If your text to speech voices stop reading, try changing the voice and change it back again if necessary. NB Not all voices are available in Ningxia, you will have fewer voice options.

If your speech to text (ie transcription) stops working , try changing one or two words of the text and retesting. If it still does not work, contact Poodll support.

Existing Student Attempts and Activity Data

Changing the region will not move any data we store in the cloud to the new region. But the old data will still be accessible. Note that Poodll only stores media files and transcripts. Almost all of your student data is stored on your Moodle server. So changing regions is a safe process.
